                ARTIST STATEMENT:
“City of Gems” is Gloria Odoemelam’s depiction of the Virginia Park neighborhood in her hometown of Detroit. A historic community that was at the center of the pivotal 1967 Detroit riot and was once a bustling upper-middle class enclave filled with grand homes, this neighborhood has since experienced rapid urban blight. Where someone may see neighborhood strewn with abandoned houses, all Gloria sees is a community of gems with a beautiful Black legacy that has welcomed her with open arms.
Designed as a choker necklace, this piece emulates the closeness of the community. The hands are connected by chains to replicate an embrace. The 22k gold and silver chains represent the neighborhood’s sprawling streets, some now empty and other dotted with gemstones, or homes, in citrine, amethyst, garnet, pink tourmaline and sapphire. Considered love stones, these gems symbolize Gloria’s unconditional love for Virginia Park.
