About Amira Rasool
I am a former writer and fashion editor that has worked with top global publications, including TIME, Vogue, Teen Vogue, i-D, PAPER, Glamour, InStyle, V Magazine, and WWD. I previously contributed to these publications as a writer or through working in their fashion departments.
Outside of work, I’m a passionate Black history scholar. I attended Rutgers University where I received my Bachelor’s degree in African American and African Studies. I later earned a Master of Philosophy in African Studies from the University of Cape Town.
Moved to Cape Town, South Africa to better understand the problems brands were having and develop the business plan, while pursuing my master’s degree at UCT.
Traveled Africa visiting Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana to do research & develop relationships. I was writing articles about the design scene for publications.
Launched The Folklore as multi-brand e-commerce site with 20 brands from Africa and the diaspora in fashion, beauty, & home. Packed & shipped orders myself! I thought of the idea for The Folklore after taking my first trip to South Africa. Discovered amazing brands & wanted to find a way to economically empower them.
Raised our first round of venture capital funding after closing a $1.7M pre-seed investment. Hired our first full time employees.
